Introduction
Childhood is the most critical time for growth as well as for development of the mind and to fight infections. So, it is very essential that the children should get a good dose of energy, proteins, vitamins and minerals very frequently.
A healthy diet consumed helps in preventing malnutrition in all its forms and also during some medical conditions. But during such medical conditions, due to anorexia, nausea, abdominal cramping, and bloating, the child may not be interested in taking the regular Food. This arise major issues of concern such as insufficient/ imbalanced intake of foods/nutrients which can make the child weaker and the ability to recover from such medical conditions gets delayed. Poor nutrition can lead to reduced immunity, increased susceptibility to disease. Hence good nutrition or proper intake of food is the key in relation to the body’s dietary requirement is ultimately essential to recover faster.
What is recommended During Such Medical Conditions?
Bland Diet is recommended as a complementary food to the Child In such medical conditions. A bland diet consists of foods that are low in fiber and fat. Foods that are both low in fiber and fat are easier for the body to digest and are often referred to as low-residue or soft diets. These kind of diets can be helpful, as the foods are relatively non-irritating to the tissue in child mouth, throat, stomach, and intestines. Often, it's recommended to maintain a regular diet to ensure proper nutrition, however due to the upset stomach or nausea or due to anorexia that sometimes accompany such medical conditions, a bland diet may be better tolerated.
In the conditions of fever or illness, anorexia plays a predominant role at the beginning; the child may not be interested to take any kind of food. But it is not advisable to permit such as it may affect the body’s nutrition, in turn this can make the child weaker and the ability to recover from such medical conditions gets delayed. Hence in such conditions Bland diet is recommended as a complementary food to the child.
If the child has a diarrhea and other symptoms like nausea, abdominal cramping, and bloating, temporarily following a complementary food of easily digestible in nature, reduces stress on the digestive system and gives the bowels a chance to rest, so that the child can recover. Complementary food also decreases the amount of waste or residue in the colon, means child will have fewer and less frequent bowel movements. The slower transit time reduces diarrhea and helps child’s body stay nourished. The easily digested food also encourages restoring the body’s fluid and electrolyte balance.
It is very important to follow that hygienic practices are followed while preparing and feeding the complementary food to the child. Hence specially formulated balanced diet is necessary during some medical conditions which child needs to be served with care
